Cosmetic
surgery is a branch of surgery that deals with
problems of appearance that develop during life
and which make people feel self-conscious. If you
have a problem of appearance that distresses or
irritates you, an operation can be done to put it
right. There are many different cosmetic surgery
operations that can help with changing your
appearance, some of which are mentioned below.
There are many other problems of appearance not
mentioned, which can be treated.
Please note that laser treatment may not be
available at all hospitals. Please enquire for
further details.
Blepharoplasty
(Bags) The effects of ageing are most
apparent around the eyes. Excess loose skin and/or
fat accumulate in the upper and lower eyelids;
"bags", as they are commonly known can result.
Rhinoplasty Rhinoplasty is a
branch of cosmetic surgery which reshapes the
nose. Treatment may be carried out to improve a
patient's appearance, or when combined with other
procedures, to relieve nasal blockage, snoring and
other breathing related problems. Depending upon
the treatment it may be carried out under local or
general anaesthetic.
Breast Reshaping
or Augmentation There are many natural
factors that affect the size and shape of a
woman's breasts, including inherited
characteristics, pregnancy and the ageing process.
Breasts can be made larger by a procedure
called "Augmentation Mammoplasty". This involves
soft implants being surgically inserted behind the
body tissue to give each breast a fuller, more
rounded look.
Breasts can also be made
smaller. The weight of excessively large breasts
can create a range of problems including skin
irritation, back and neck pain, breathing
difficulties and uncomfortable shoulder indents
caused by bra strap pressure. They can also be the
cause of distressing embarrassment and poorly
fitting clothes. "Reduction Mammoplasty" is the
procedure by which tissue and skin is removed and
the nipple repositioned.
Breasts can be
lifted by "Mastoplexy", which is a procedure
suitable for women who are content with the size
of their breasts, but want to reduce the loose
sagging skin.
Facial
Aesthetics A face-lift or "Rhytidectomy"
involves making incisions behind the hairline and
hidden within the creases of the ears. Excess
fatty deposits are removed and loose muscles
tightened. The slack in the skin itself is then
taken up, and the excess removed. As a result, the
sagging skin on your face and neck is reduced.
"Genioplasty" changes the shape of the
chin.
"Bat ear correction" repositions
ears that are too prominent.
"Maxillary
Osteotomy" reshapes the bones in the top half of
the face.
"Mandibular Osteotomy" reshapes
the jawline.
"Malar Augmentation"
redefines cheekbones.
"Dermabration"
refinishes the skin to remove scars, discoloration
and wrinkles.
Removal of Skin
Blemishes Many skin blemishes respond well
to laser treatment, from large purple "Port Wine
Stains" to small clusters of red thread veins just
below the skin. A laser is directed at the
affected area, and the beam is made up of yellow
light, which is not absorbed by the healthy skin,
but only by the darker blood vessels causing the
blemish. These break down, and are dealt with by
the body's own defence mechanisms, through a
series of natural processes.
Laser surgery
is particularly effective in the removal of
blemishes in children and babies, whose skin is
especially responsive to the treatment.
Body Fat Removal through
Liposculpture Liposculpture or "suction
lipectomy" is a procedure that can treat fatty
deposits that occur in certain areas of the body,
on both men and women alike. One or more incisions
are made (no more than half an inch long) and a
surgical tube known as a cannula is inserted.
Through this tube the fatty deposits are broken
down and removed through suction.
