This ultrasound scan is usually performed
through the abdomen. It allows the pregnancy to be
accurately dated by measuring the length of the
fetus. An expected date of delivery can be then
calculated. By measurement of the nuchal
translucency (fluid thickness behind the fetal
neck) and measuring the level of two hormones in
your blood an estimate of your risk of Down
Syndrome can be calculated. If the risk for Downs
Syndrome is greater than 1 in 300, CVS or
Amniocentesis should be considered.
This method of screening for Down Syndrome
identifies 90% of Downs' pregnancies.
